An omni antenna, or omnidirectional antenna, transmits and receives radio waves in all 360° directions. This capability eliminates the need for directional adjustment, allowing for unrestricted transmission and reception.
While omni antennas are typically omnidirectional in either vertical or horizontal planes, those functional in both directions are known as fully omnidirectional antennas.
Due to their tendency to pick up extraneous radio waves, they are usually employed where the target signal is strong.
Omni antennas are utilized in broadcasting television, radio, and cellular signals due to their all-directional radio wave emission. They are increasingly common in wireless LAN applications, both outdoors and indoors, enhancing performance through simple antenna replacements. Omni antennas are particularly useful in areas where directional antennas struggle to transmit or receive signals effectively.
The most common type of omni antenna is the dipole antenna, typically a long, slender rod with a T or V shape. Its total length equals half the wavelength of the target radio wave, optimizing for resonance.
In operation, an alternating current supplied at the antenna's center travels to both ends and back, creating a magnetic field that generates and transmits radio waves. When receiving, external radio waves induce an electric current in the antenna, flowing to the center for reception. The dipole antenna's radio waves spread in concentric circles around its axis, forming a doughnut-like pattern, but with minimal reach directly above and below the antenna.
